Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie review

What if Marvel made a Jackie Chan movie?

What’s it about?

A farm boy on Tatooine valet in San Francisco returns to his father, a villainous mastermind who controls a global criminal network, to wrest him away from the dark side. But in the films dying moments, will he say “you were right about me. Tell your sister, you were riiiiiiiiiiiight”?

What did we think?

Stephen Scott says: The question has finally been answered: “What if Marvel made a Jackie Chan movie?”

The other question, “will they make an origin story as good as Iron Man ever again?” has also been answered.

There’s not much to say. It’s a Marvel movie so you know what to expect – lots of action, a hero’s journey (that matches the original Star Wars trilogy’s beats), a snarky companion who almost steals the show, and a cameo that does steal the show.

To prepare us for Doctor Strange’s Multiverse of Madness, Marvel continues to push us towards the mystical side of the MCU. Here with Chinese magic, and it is beautiful to behold.

An absolute corker of a thrill ride. 8 and a bit out of 10!

Pros

  • Action
  • Humour
  • New worlds (well, China)
  • THAT cameo (which we won't spoil)

Cons

  • It's another superhero movie. So if that's not your thing. Well. Sorry.
  • The final battle sequence is a little OTT
