WHAT'S IT ABOUT

A farm boy on Tatooine valet in San Francisco returns to his father, a villainous mastermind who controls a global criminal network, to wrest him away from the dark side. But in the films dying moments, will he say “you were right about me. Tell your sister, you were riiiiiiiiiiiight”?

The question has finally been answered: "What if Marvel made a Jackie Chan movie?"

The other question, "will they make an origin story as good as Iron Man ever again?" has also been answered.

There's not much to say. It's a Marvel movie so you know what to expect - lots of action, a hero's journey (that matches the original Star Wars trilogy's beats), a snarky companion who almost steals the show, and a cameo that does steal the show.

To prepare us for Doctor Strange's Multiverse of Madness, Marvel continues to push us towards the mystical side of the MCU. Here with Chinese magic, and it is beautiful to behold.

An absolute corker of a thrill ride. 4.1 / 5

Well, at least no-one can accuse Marvel of doing the same thing with every movie anymore. Shang-Chi is Marvel taking a legit stab at blending Wuxia with a superhero origin story, and it's great for the most part, only losing its way a little towards the end. While the beginning of the movie feels like a high-budget Hong Kong movie influenced by superhero cinema, this dynamic flips towards the end. The finale feels a little rushed and chaotic, and at times the kicking and punching isn't enough to stop you saying "wait, what?".

Having said that, the fight scenes are fantastic and frequent, there's some genuinely great worldbuilding, and the movie has my new favourite cameo appearance in the entire MCU. Fans of either Hong Kong martial arts movies or superhero films will enjoy this, fans of both will love it. 3.5 / 5
