What’s it about?
It’s Moana (2016) again, it’s the same movie.
What’d we think?
Like all of Disney’s “live-action” remakes, Moana is pointless, but it’s pleasant enough. It clears the incredibly low bar set by its predecessors by not being actively bad, but anything it does well is done better in the 2016 version.
All the songs still hit, if not as well as in the original. Catherine Laga’aia is very good in the lead role, and the supporting cast is fine (especially Rena Owen) but the animal sidekicks don’t translate too well, and Dwayne Johnson’s performance lacks the bouncy energy that was integral to Maui’s characterisation.
If you haven’t seen the original, go watch that instead. If you have seen the original, then you don’t need to see this. It’s basically the same as the original, but slightly worse.
