A prequel to The Sopranos, looking at organised crime in New Jersey in the 1960s.

What did we think

The Many Saints of Newark should have been a series. As a prequel to The Greatest TV Show Ever Madeā„¢ it doesn't have nearly enough breathing room to develop a coherent plot, and makes bizarre choices on where to focus its attention. As a movie, it's a poorly paced, disconnected collection of scenes that fails to ever stand on its own.

If you haven't watched The Sopranos, you'll have a hard time following the characters, and will undoubtedly feel like references are going over your head. If you're a fan of The Sopranos, the callbacks (call-forwards?) to the show are more likely to make you groan, and you'll wonder why so much time is devoted to new characters and dead-end storylines. 1.5 / 5 stars
