What’s it about?
A socially awkward but logistically brilliant young woman is passed over for promotion by her new 20-something frat boy boss. When they’re the only survivors of a plane crash, their dynamic changes when stranded on a dessert island and her abilities are the difference between life and death.
What did we think?
Anthony Sherratt says: Despite the billing this is not a traditional horror. There are very few jumpscares and little we’d associate with the genre. And yet, director Sam Raimi provides a continuous series of moments of dread that leave us uncomfortable and consistently wary.
The acting of Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien is off the chart with McAdams’ creepy yet all-too-relatable character forcing you to constantly question whether her actions are justified or not. And therein lies the true horror of this film. Does bad behaviour justify bad behaviour in return?
And despite all this, there are moments you will genuinely laugh out loud. This is far funnier than it has a right to be, especially given the early cringe in the setup. This is Raimi’s best movies in years and it’s a wildly entertaining especially for anyone who’s ever had a bad boss and wanted to exact revenge upon them.
It’s basically survivor mixed with castaway with a bad HR report theme. All directed by the Evil Dead guy. Great fun.
