What did we think?

Ciara Twomey says: Jon Erwin’s YOUNG WASHINGTON is an overall enjoyable and well-crafted historical drama. What was most striking was its setting and costume design. This attention to detail and atmosphere in the detailed costumes and carefully created historical setting, gave the film a convincing sense of authenticity and effectively transported me into the period. I also enjoyed seeing a younger George Washington and exploring some of the experiences that helped shape the person he would eventually become.

However, I did find the pacing somewhat slow at times. There were sections where the story seemed to lose momentum, and I felt certain scenes could have been shortened to make the film more engaging. I also found William Franklyn-Miller’s performance inconsistent. While there were moments where he portrayed Washington effectively, some of the more emotional scenes felt slightly unconvincing and lacked the depth I was expecting.

The battle scenes were visually decent and added some excitement, but I felt they were fairly conventional and didn’t have the impact I was hoping for. They were enjoyable to watch, but unfortunately, none of them felt particularly distinctive or memorable.

So while the content is interesting, overall YOUNG WASHINGTON is merely a solid – though worthwhile – historical drama. Engaging enough for people with an interest in the era, though a little short in the detail a true buff would be looking for.
