What’s it about?
When LeBron James and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before. It’s Toons versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of LeBron’s life, that will redefine his bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself.
What did we think?
I spent most of the game scouring the background to see old favorites (Space Ghost, Penelope Pitstop, the animaniacs and sooooo many more) mingle with Batman villains, King Kong and a universe worth of characters. The nostalgia porn overcomes many of the film’s shortcomings for us older viewers but, more importantly, younger kids really respond to the main storyline.
There’s nothing groundbreaking or unpredictable in the new Space Jam but there’s a lot to be said for the way this film showcases Warner Bros IP. There’s an early montage that provides both a number of unexpected crossovers and some great laughs but they really pull out all stops when the match finally gets underway. Then we’re treated to a smorgasbord of characters old and new.
