What’s it about?
In a dystopian future where a fertility crisis means no babes have been born for years, a smuggler ends up fighting against criminals when he finds himself transporting a mother a newborn baby.
What did we think?
Considering the plot, it’s difficult to avoid comparisons to the incredible CHILDREN OF MEN, but it has to be said this slick Australian film is impressive regardless. High quality production values combine with a thoughtful script and solid pacing to provide an entertaining adventure.
The acting is top notch and pretty much flawless throughout the cast but a special mention needs to be made of Charlotte Maggi (The Surfer and Rebel Moon) and Callan Mulvey (The Last King Of The Cross and bit parts in just about everything) who resist the urge to over act relying on quiet and subtle emotion instead. And it’s this understated tension that elevates the film, providing a pacing that is relentless without being in the viewer’s face.
While the plot is a little derivative, director and writer Stephen De Villiers (The Bloom) should be proud of the new perspective and impressive quality.
THE RUN is in Cinemas now and available for digital rental from June 17 2026.
