What’s it about?
A seemingly normal man, Charles “Chuck” Krant, experiences the wonder of love, the heartbreak of loss, and the multitudes contained in all of us.
What did we think?
Anthony Sherratt says: A hauntingly beautiful tale that is masterfully told in reverse. Starting with Act 3 and the end of days is an audacious way to begin a film but it introduces the characters while asking the pertinent questions. That the answers to these questions aren’t immediately obvious is part of the allure of this truly charming tale.
It’s nearly impossible to not fall in love with Chuck (Tom Hiddleston) as we meet him in a scene that simply screams joy. The reasons behind the unlikely scene slowly fall into place and you become more and more immersed in the story as we progress (or regress with the reverse ordering I guess).
It’s a genuinely endearing film about what it means to be human and it works on so many levels that the more you think about it, the more you see and get back. The fact you barely notice the all-star cast (in addition to Hiddleston, it features Mark Hamill, Karen Gilliam, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthew Lillard and Nick Offerman as the dry narrator), speaks volumes of just how enchanting the narrative is.
It’s quirky, unpredictable and magical. One of the best of the year so far. 9/10
