Good Boy movie review

When man’s best friend is caught up in the supernatural, is it doggone or good boy?

What’s it about?

A horror movie told from the perspective of the dog, Good Boy follows Indy as his owner moves to an old and supposedly-haunted house in the woods.

What did we think?

Anthony Sherratt says: Sometimes the best stories are simple ones. Good Boy doesn’t have a convoluted plot – instead it focuses on a dog observing strange things happening around his beloved owner in the cursed family house.

It’s a little heavy handed in the reveal of the ‘true menace’ but considering the amount of experimentation the film is embracing, this is a minor quibble. Instead it’s far more rewarding to highlight just how much emotion they pack into a film that barely shows human faces let alone facial expressions. Indy the dog (played by Indy the dog) is loving, curious, wary, loyal, frightened and, ultimately, fearless in his unwavering dedication to his owner and it’s a credit to the filmmakers that they manage to convey this with virtually no dialogue.

It’s not a perfect film but it doesn’t need to be. The independent filmmakers aren’t as polished but nor are they constrained as they swing hard. It’s a breath of fresh air in a genre – and indeed industry – that prefers to reboot and rehash ideas rather than attempt new ways to tell stories.
