Crime 101 Movie Review

Former Avengers go head-to-head in a crime drama? This could go one of two ways…

What’s it about?

An elusive jewel thief whose heists along the 101 freeway have left police baffled sets his sights on the ultimate score. His plans intersect with those of an insurance broker while the police detective believes he has cracked the thief’s pattern.

What did we think?

Anthony Sherratt says: Nowadays you come into ‘master thief’ movies expecting a charismatic anti-hero who has everything under control, so it’s refreshing to see Chris Hemsworth playing a socially awkward criminal who just doesn’t want to hurt people. Yes, he’s intelligent and interesting but his lack of swagger provides for an unexpected depth.

For the first act the three main characters have their own stories that barely overlap but the slow pacing provides the viewer with an opportunity to get their teeth into the story. Halle Berry’s insurance broker explores the realities of an older woman in the workplace and while Mark Ruffalo plays yet another clever-but-not-listened-to detective, his struggles with his personal life only add to an engaging story.

As the stories start to come together it becomes predictable but in a deliberate way that builds your dread. Throw in some quirky cinematography and this Bart Layton film manages to avoid becoming just another crime flick.

It mightn’t reach great heights but it’s better than most going around. Plus it features Thor, Hulk and Storm all in one movie.

Alright
A surprising entry into the crime genre that engages well and uses its own predictability to build tension.
