WHAT'S IT ABOUT

Having left active service, James Bond’s tranquil life in Jamaica is broken when old friend Felix Leiter shows up. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond on the trail of a mysterious villain who’s armed with a dangerous new technology.

I'm already looking forward to rewatching this with subtitles. Mainly because I have no idea why the big bad is doing what he's doing. And lots of other things were mumbled too.

But it's one of the most complete Bond stories since Casino Royale, fleshing out the lead by building on the history of not only Daniel Craig's tenure, but also nodding at the classics - especially On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

An epically fitting end to the Daniel Craig era, and a touch of redemption for George Lazenby thrown in. Here's the movie they were trying to make back then but didn't have the guts. 3.9 / 5 stars

There’s a lot of love for Bond films in the latest installment. Sadly, there’s also a lot that misses the mark. The homages to earlier iconic moments are truly breathtaking and remind you of a wonderful relationship. Sadly some highly questionable story and directing decisions reinforce that perhaps the relationship you’re remembering was actually with the bunny boiler - great in the good bits BUT…

The handling of a new 007? Great. Bond’s calmness under fire? Wonderful. Having an academy award winning actor as the villain and then not using him for the first two thirds of the film? Wait, what?? Such a waste of talent. Rami Malik has good presence but his limited use reduces him to a cliche that leaves a stink on a movie that, while fun, has too many problems.

It’s hard to be invested in anyone other than Bond (though I would watch a movie featuring Cuban CIA agent Paloma (Ana de Armas)). The storyline is bland and the high notes feel like they’ve been assembled in dot form beforehand and the plot written around them.

It’s still a 007 film so it has the explosions and panders to the fans (and to Daniel Craig it would seem) but it’s not one I expect to ever watch again.
