In a loose adaptation of the popular game series, Milla Jovovich plays a soldier from our world who is thrust into another dimension where she fights monsters with Tony Jaa.

What did we think

If you're familiar with the existing body of work of writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson (Milla's husband), this is potentially the best work he has ever done. For anyone unfamiliar with his body of work, it's incredibly important to note that this is not high praise.

Monster Hunter is exactly what it says on the tin; big, dumb action with some genuinely good looking visuals, and a few laughs. The lightweight plot and disposable characters are what you'd expect from a studio-driven videogame adaptation, but bad editing, frankly bizarre pacing, and misguided faithfulness to the source material elevate this movie to a whole new level of interestingly bad.

Monster Hunter is a Bad Movie, but it's a much better Bad Movie than you may be expecting. If you're a fan of the games, you'll love to hate it, but for everyone else, it could very well scratch your itch for mindless spectacle.
