The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift – every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger.

For years Disney has been telling children that they’re special. That each and every individual is special. But what if your weren’t as special as everyone else in your family? That’s the intriguing proposition put forward in their latest film ENCANTO.

Being treated differently - even by your own family - is something that will strike a chord for some and give others pause and the directors handle it well, establishing Mirabel as relatable but a little isolated even in her tight-knit community. It also means the story is not as predictable as most Disney films. Sure, you know where you’re going to end up but you’re truly unsure of how you’re going to get there.

The music is catchy though either the speed or the accents saw me missing lines and wishing for subtitles at points. Regardless the quirky musical numbers match the tone perfectly.

It’s wonderfully colorful - both literally and figuratively - and there’s a streak of weirdness that sets it above most of the animated features this season.
