What’s it about?
A man awakes in a spaceship without memories of who he is or what he’s doing. As his recollection grows he starts to realise he’s there to save the world.
What did we think?
Anthony Sherratt says: From a book heavily mired in science, it’s interesting that the film adaptation glosses over most of the scientific explanation and exploration. It’s understandable – even expected – given a desire to make it more accessible to the general public but what is unexpected is just how much heart is on show once the science is pared back.
For those who don’t know, Project Hail Mary is an amazing book by Andy Weir (who also gave us The Martian) where a save-the-world story is mixed with an amnesiac what-is-going-on narrative and is pinned together by a consistent and fascinating understanding of the natural world.
It’s a fascinating premise and incredibly human, something that will resonate with audiences from a wide array of backgrounds. Ryan Gosling’s performance as an imperfect human being doing their best is close to perfect though it’s the company he keeps that steals the show.
Favouring practical effects over green screen, the film also feels far more grounded even with the impressive outer space settings.
At the end of the day it’s a story of hope, friendship and courage in the face of fear. It’s a simply beautiful film for all ages and backgrounds.
