The Report is a genuinely riveting political thriller that manages to avoid the genre tropes that may have appeared in a more fictionalised version of this story, instead focusing on the meticulous, procedural work involved in such a huge investigation. While it's a little dry to begin with due to the sheer volume of information that needs to be dumped on the audience, it moves at such a rapid, persistent pace that it effortlessly holds your attention. Adam Driver carries most of the movie by himself, and perfectly portrays the character's almost obsessive drive for the truth, but the movie also has a huge number of fantastic actors popping up for one or two scenes in key roles. The frustration and disbelief of the main characters as they uncover the grubby secrets behind the interrogation program is palpable, and the actual scenes of the "interrogations" are mercifully sparingly used, but incredibly effective. However it's the revelations around the scope and callousness of the program that garnered the audible gasps from my audience, and rightly so - this is a great movie, and incredibly relevant.
