The new Scream is a return to the very intelligent gasp-inducing storyline of the original. Clever, self-referential and mocking, this new entry is pretty much everything a fan of the franchise could hope for.

It’s inventive while also paying homage to the original and the endless tropes it inspired. It chooses to walk the risky line of meta-observation and thankfully manages to do it very well. The final act is a true delight.

Without giving anything away, the original cast balance against the newcomers in a very satisfying way, allowing further development of beloved characters (one in particular) all while giving us a mystery to solve. It’s the good scream we need right now.
