A musical fantasy about the all-too human story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years.

What did we think

Fans looking for an uplifting celebration of Elton John’s music may have to look elsewhere. Sure ROCKETMAN contains a number of the big songs – a couple seemingly shoehorned in odd places – but the overall tone of the movie is a bit of a downer. In fact, you’d be forgiven for walking out wondering if Reginald/Elton had actually experienced a happy day in his first 30 years of life. But what the movie does offer up is an interesting narrative style and some truly stunning performances – particularly from Taron Egerton. The surreal nature of some of the musical numbers flick between wonderful and disturbing, but the overall mood and tone don’t truly build to anything other than a minor revelation or two so are emotionally light. True fans will still tap their toes and sing along but I can’t help but wonder if it could have been so much more with a little more focus on the joy he also bought to the world rather than the relentless self-loathing that drove him. 3.4/5
