Directed by Clint Eastwood and based on true events, “Richard Jewell” is a story of what happens when what is reported as fact obscures the truth. A security guard saves the day by discovering a pipe bomb but is soon vilified by both the FBI and national media.

You know that saying about justice not only needing to be done but needing to be seen to be done? Richard Jewell is a cautionary tale about what happens when being “seen” to be doing something is more important than the justice bit. The true story of the security guard hounded by the FBI and press over the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Park bombing is in equal measures compelling and infuriating and downright disturbing. Sure, director Clint Eastwood was almost certainly more intent on making a pro-Trump statement than righting a past wrong but look beyond that and you have a bloody good flick. And while Kathy Bates’ supporting actress nominated performance as Jewell’s mum Bobi has been largely overlooked in the crowded field, it will make your heart break and is worth the admission price alone. 4 stars
