A delightful mix of rich mythology and whimsical children's-style storytelling, Ne Zha is a simply wonderful tale full of rich nuance and emotion. It's an adult story but the occasional moments of slapstick and in-your-face-humour serve to remind you of the emotions in play and it's here the movie truly shines: the emotions of a youth who's told denigratingly what he is who feels spurred on to prove them right; the hopes of overcoming the local loathing; the lesson of putting others first... it's a wonderful and engaging story interspersed with the Chinese mythology tropes that will catch you off guard but leave you spellbound. 4.5/5
