Mothers’ Day 1924, a young maid spends her day off with her lover, and we see how the events of the day echo throughout the rest of her life.

What did we think

Mothering Sunday flits about in time, examining love, loss, memory, and the events that shape a person's life.

There's a dreamy quality to the film that gives it a nostalgic and wistful tone and the story is compact and quite well-told, but it's ultimately good without being terribly entertaining.

If you see yourself as the target audience for the film you'll probably enjoy it considerably more than I did, and if you're not the target audience you'll most likely appreciate it less. 3 / 5 stars
