This sequel is profoundly, deeply unnecessary. While the CGI is gorgeous and the cast impressive (like, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Imelda Staunton and Warwick Davis kind of impressive), the plot lands somewhere between a straight-to-video cartoon sequel and a young adult Game of Thrones. It’s not without charm in places - Maleficent’s attempts to engage in polite human small talk are genuinely funny - and fans of the first film will probably find it worth seeing. Just don’t expect magic. Three stars.
