An out-of-touch, stone cold, mid-fifties talk show host reluctantly accepts the help of a bright-eyed novice writer to “shake the dust off” her show.

What did we think

You know those movies which you just can’t get lost inside? Whether it’s because the characters aren't believable or that there’s just no beating heart to it - soz Mindy but this is that.

The great dialogue is a definite respite, but raises the question: do good jokes make a good script?

Mindy Kaling’s Molly is super under-developed: we don’t know her, therefore we don’t care for her, ergo there is no tension.

Emma Thompson and John Lithgow have a truly beautiful and believable on-screen husband and wife relationship, but the rest is ... as they say ... forgettable. 3/5 stars
