All your favourite Downton Abbey characters are back and all in a flap over a royal visit to their less-than-humble home.

What did we think

Fans of the upstairs/downstairs show will be positively filled with glee to see their old favourites on the big screen. (I might have cried when the theme music kicked in, shut up.)

Those who aren’t familiar with the long-running period drama will wonder why the heck they just paid $20-odd dollars to see a movie where nothing much happens. It’s more like one of the series’ famed Christmas episodes than it is a full movie; a chance to check-in and see how the people you’ve known and loved over the years are doing.

Was it needed? No. Was it gorgeously satisfying for fans? Yes.

Should anyone not familiar with Lady Mary, Lord Grantham and the like see it? Absolutely not. It relies too much on former storylines to be a standalone movie and will have series strangers wondering “Who the hell is that and why do I care about them?” BECAUSE OF SIX SEASONS OF CAREFULLY METERED OUT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, KAREN.

2.5 out of 5 for non fans.
4 out of 5 for fans. Karen.
