Constructed from over 500 hours of never-before-seen footage, this documentary centers on the career of celebrated football player Diego Armando Maradona, who played for S.S.C. Napoli in the 1980s.

What did we think

Filmmaker Asif Kapadia certainly has an exceptional knack for carefully editing existing footage into compelling stories. Sadly, when much of the footage comes from a mid-1980s handycam, it doesn't look brilliant when enlarged on a cinema screen, and at times it's difficult to make out exactly what we're seeing. Diego Maradona has some great moments (and that's coming from someone who is very much not a football enthusiast) but drags a little towards the end. Overall, it's worth a watch - particularly if you love the sport - but this is one film you might be better off watching on TV. Three stars.
