WHAT'S IT ABOUT

A mother gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.

What did we think

There are a few surprises in the new Child's Play, chief among them the fact the supernatural influences are gone. Instead, Chucky is now a home virtual assistant (think Alexa or Google Home) who's programmed to learn and adapt to best serve their best friend. Sadly this Chucky has no filters or restrictions so we end up with a sociopathic, satanic Siri.

    With knives.

If that sounds interesting and playful rather than scary then you're right - it's very light for a horror movie choosing instead to tap into the goofiness of 80s films. Yes, there's still a bit of gore and gruesome deaths (all to the soundtrack of a very creepy sounding Mark Hamill) but not as many as you'd expect and in fact, the new Child's Play is just a bit of fun.
