An amnesiac is part of an elite interstellar military squad but when, after a mishap, her memories of a life on earth start returning, she finds herself precariously positioned between warring races. And the battlefield is her (newly remembered) home planet.

Another day, another Marvel movie. It's getting a bit repetitive now.

Yes, it's well made (although having to explain a new universe does make the first half a bit slow), and it's great to see strong female characters on both sides of the fence, but superheroes are starting to get a little bit omnipotent. It really appears that Captain Marvel has only been introduced as the macguffin to restore the universe in Avengers: Milking the Fans.

Probably my favourite thing about Captain Marvel is the way the heads of the sexist 'fans' will explode in outrage at the titular character being "overpowered". And the fact you'll be able to use one of their favourite lines back at them: "don't you read the comics? Aren't you a real fan?"

Yes there are feminist tones in this movie (both subtle and not-at-all subtle) but that's a reflection of the character - a woman trying to prove herself and break into a male-dominated industry. It's consistent and it works. But more importantly, this movie spends some time on character development before indulging in the inevitable climactic fight scene. While Avengers: Infinity War left us feeling flat and defeated, Captain Marvel left us with hope. It truly felt like the cavalry was arriving for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.

There are a few uneven moments - Larson's Carol Danvers tells jokes early on at a time that seems at odds with the story - but the overall humour is spot-on and there are enough shout outs, 90s jokes and great songs to keep you entertained.
