WHAT'S IT ABOUT

On the eve of their high school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realise they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.

Have you grown tired of the same type of safe, Marvel-esque comedy, copy and pasted over and again on our screens? Hey, if Endgame’s cookie cutter template can reel in $818 mill, don’t fix it, right?

Booksmart is the fresh lick of peppermint ice-cream that we have been begging for, (can you tell what my cinema snack was?). First-time director Olivia Wilde’s experimentation with comic timing and more drawn-out shots has resulted in something that feels like a whole new breed of naturalistic, exciting, 2019 funnies. AND I LOVE IT.

The comedy bursts out of each unique, layered, often zany character (with which the four female writers aint stingy - there’s a number) who are able to individually establish themselves and their comedic quirks quickly, without straying from the plot.

Highlights for me include: a ground-breaking female-masturbation chat, a piss-in-your-pants laughing animated sequence and a moving no-words-needed underwater character journey. 4.5/5

Easily the best movie of 2019 - somehow Olivia Wilde in her directorial debut manages to compress every nerd's entire passage of puberty into one night of reckless abandon.

It's smutty, raucous, filthy, hilarious, and quite insightful.

A coming of age film for the ages. #NoRegrets 4.5/5 stars
