The story of British poet Siegfried Sassoon, decorated for bravery in WW1 before becoming an outspoken anti-war advocate.

What did we think

Benediction is a long, slow, quietly affecting drama about the toll that war takes on a man, and how this toll is felt throughout the rest of his life. As a biopic of Sassoon, the movie is a patchwork of scenes and moments that give a fittingly poetic impression of the man, but doesn't have too clear of an arc.

Top-notch performances and a terrific score elevate the film further, but the sheer number of characters whose names I was supposed to recognise had me making frequent mental notes to check Wikipedia later on. I appreciated the film a lot more than I enjoyed it, it's an absolutely beautiful film but a hard one to recommend.
