An Irish actor, Michael began his screen career seduced by Anne Margaret in Tony Richardson's 'Joseph Andrews'. He worked extensively in touring rep in England throughout the 1980's. Moving to LA he had a deal at Columbia Tri Star to write for the producer Dan Melnick and in 1992 worked with Bernard Rose on the first of the Candyman franchise, starring Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd. Three years later, he reprised his character of Professor Philip Purcell in "Candyman: Farewell to Flesh" (1995). This was directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon with whom Michael worked, most recently in the 'Good Liar' with Ian McKellan 2018 and Helen Mirren. His small-screen appearances include 'Cold Lazarus' "Highlander", "Our Mutual Friend" "Inspector Morse" 'Queer as Folk' and 'Perfect Strangers. during the 1990s. In 2000 he appeared onstage with Maggie Smith in Alan Bennet's 'Lady In The Van' which ran in the West End for ten months. His work in the 2000s included "Treasured Island" in 2007 as Captain Smollett. Crusade in Jeans as baddie, Anselmus, ceremonially drowned by the end of the film. In 2009, he played a devious government project director in the Sci-Fi feature "Star Runners" (TV), followed by the dark drama "Dorian Gray" starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. He worked with Meryl Streep, in 'The Hours' and more recently in 'The Iron Lady'. In 2014 he worked opposite Johnny Depp in the now cult comedy 'Mordecai'. He is best recognized as Judge Buller in the BBC period courtroom drama series "Garrow's Law" (TV) and for his work in 'Poldark' series 1 and 2. More recently he appeared as Rab Butler Home Secretary in the Award winning 'The Crown', and opposite Hugh Grant in 'A Very English Scandal' as Regie Maudlin. He has just filmed 'The Last Song' with Jack Lowden and Hayley Atwell for the BBC.
